Greetings from Vaiko

The Thai festival celebrated by Tamils is truly a noble festival that brings happiness to the world.

Pongal is a foremost, golden festival that is secular in nature.

It is a noble festival that honours farmers — the Thai festival, the Tamil festival, the Pongal festival.

For Tamils, it can truly be said that there is no other festival that can be called the Tamil festival as fittingly as Pongal.

For this very genuine reason, we not only celebrate Pongal Day as a festival, but also observe it as a unique and great Tamil Day.

The reason why Pongal greetings have gained wide acceptance among the people is that Pongal is regarded as a festival belonging to the Tamils.

On such a celebratory occasion, it is the very nature of Tamil people to wish to send greetings to one another.

A greeting, for Tamils, means that all Tamils should unite, overcome the indignities and shortcomings they face today, and live with human values and dignity.

Justice must be delivered to Eelam Tamils. The United Nations Human Rights Council should come forward to conduct a referendum for an independent Tamil Eelam, and those responsible for genocide must be punished.

Among the people of the world, it is the Tamils who celebrate the gifts of Mother Nature. Did not poet Sathanar sing, “Those who provide food to all who live on this vast earth give life itself”? Pongal is the festival in which farmers, who generously provide food, offer gratitude to nature, to the land they till, to the fields that yield crops, and to the cattle wealth that assists them in their labour.

On behalf of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, I extend my Thai Pongal festival greetings — the Tamil festival — to all Tamils living across the world.
