Vaiko Files Case Seeking Removal of Ban on LTTE in India: Hearing Adjourned in High Court

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was banned in India in 2012 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. This order was later confirmed by the UAPA Tribunal. Challenging the tribunal’s decision, MDMK General Secretary Vaiko filed a case in the Madras High Court in 2013.

The case came up for hearing yesterday before a bench comprising Justices Anita Sumanth and Sudhir Kumar. Vaiko appeared in person and rose to present his arguments. At that time, the counsel appearing for the Union government requested an adjournment, stating that the Additional Solicitor General would be appearing in the case. Accepting this request, the judges adjourned the hearing to the 16th of this month.

Speaking to reporters after coming out of the court, Vaiko said that the struggle for the emergence of a separate Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka had not yet ended. He stated that although four phases of war led by the LTTE had concluded, the future generation would undertake a fifth phase in a new dimension to achieve a referendum for Tamil Eelam. He further added that he too would work alongside today’s younger generation in efforts aimed at the realisation of Tamil Eelam.
